New Member/First Conference Brunch

October 30th, 2005 Glenda Claborne

Given a bag of, let’s say, 15 cards with one of 5 questions written on them, what’s the probability that the question you draw is the one that asks for your most embarrassing ASIST moment? I gathered quite a collection of such moments from a line-up of ASIST luminaries, there to welcome new members and first-time attendees. But I guess they have succeeded in gaining my loyalty, I have decided to keep such things in ASIST. You’d just have to join ASIST or attend its annual meeting to find out. Or contact these ASIST oldies, er, big shots for their stories: Michel Menou , Anthony Debons, Andrew Dillon, Samantha Hastings, Nicholas Belkin, Michael Leach, Kris Liberman, Edie Rasmussen, T. Sarasevic, Beata Panagopoulos (who did I miss?).

But I have to warn future attendees of the New Member/First Conference Brunch that this society will make you do a version of a square dance that forces you to divulge your innermost thoughts to a partner two people to the left and two people to the right, do-si-do. The New Member/Attendee Brunch Coordinators Caryn Anderson and Elise Lewis did other things to us, believe me, like testing our organizing skills by asking us to sequence ourselves by birthdate and then by first name. I didn’t have time to find out if we February people were the smartest because we soon were lost in the fun of finding out who’s a cat or a dog or a heartless (they say lucky) pet-free person.

Here’s a tip for future attendees of this event: there IS such a thing as a lucky table. 5 out of 11 winners of fabulous door prizes came from the KM table – there were about 10 tables there. Find out that lucky table before you sit down. Also, try to get the number 69 or 96 (or 66 or 99). If you know how to rotate, you can claim either.

Anyhow, it was a fun and encouraging welcome. Dillon, next year’s conference chair, strongly encourages everyone to go to Austin next year and help make that city wilder (or was it Belkin’s shirt that said that?) .

See pictures from the brunch . My camera’s battery died so I wasn’t able to take more pics at this event.]
